Tobi Roppo in “Kanjincho”. Matsumoto Koshiro 9th (Matsumoto Hakuo 2nd) as Benkei. December, 2004 at the National Theatre.
It is an acting movement of walking while waving the hands especially widely and stepping with the foot forcefully.
It is mainly performed when the actor withdraws from the main stage through the Hanamichi. In Roppo, the actor walks by moving the hand and the foot on the same side, that is, moving the right hand and the right foot simultaneously.
There are various types Roppo to be employed according to the character’s personality and feelings.
-Tobi Roppo
It is a type of Roppo to withdraw through the Hanamichi while waving a hand widely and stamping his feet with great force. This Roppo shows that the actor is running with all his strength. The video shows a famous scene of Tobi Roppo by Benkei at the end of “Kanjincho”.
-Kitsune Roppo
It is a type of Roppo to withdraw through the Hanamichi while making gestures like a fox. The actor clasps his hands lightly to imitate the hands of the fox. This Roppo is employed when Genkuro Gitsune withdraws from the stage in “Toriimae no ba” of “Yoshitsune Sembonzakura”.
-Keisei Roppo
It is a type of Roppo performed by the leading role of “Miyajima no Danmari”. The character appears as a prostitute, but he is truly a robber named Kesataro. He performs this Roppo when he withdraws through the Hanamichi at the end. This is a peculiar type of Roppo because the actor waves both hands widely to express manhood in the upper part of his body, while in the lower part he walks in the same way as a prostitute.
-Oyogi Ropppo
It is a type of Roppo to withdraw from the stage while making gestures as if swimming. The actor disappears by waving his hands like the breaststroke. This Roppo is used for Tenjiku Tokubei, the leading role of “Tenjiku Tokubei IKokubanashi” written by Tsuruya Nanboku 4th.
