It was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Takemotoza in Osaka in 1747. The play is a collaborative work by Takeda Izumo 2nd, Miyoshi Shoraku, and Namiki Senryu. Receiving critical acclaim, it was revised into a Kabuki play in Edo the following year.
The story deals with events after Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who contributed to the battle between the Genji and the Heike, had a falling-out his older brother Yoritomo, and escaped safely from the capital city. Although the name of Yoshitsune is used, the generals of the declining Heike are mainly described in the play.
