Yoshizawa Ayame 1st (1673~1729)
He was a representative Onnagata actor in the Genroku period and left his mark on history as an actor who perfected the art of Onnagata. Being active mainly in Kamigata region, he was at the top as the leading Onnagata actor both in popularity and ability. It is said that he behaved like a woman in everyday life, and he showed a realistic acting on stage. A commentary called “Ayamegusa” in which Ayame wrote the directions for Onnagata actors had great influence on the following Onnagata actors.
