  • Soga no Goro sharpening an arrow-head in “Yanone”. Onoe Sakon 2nd (Onoe Shoroku 4th) as Soga no Goro. January, 1990 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100158000004)
One of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays.
The revenge by the brothers of Soga no Juro and Goro in the Kamakura period was widely known to the people by “Soga Monogatari”. In “Yanone”, the younger brother Goro appears as the leading role. Ichikawa Danjuro 2nd performed it for the first time in 1729 and he made the role his specialty by performing as many as four times in his lifetime.
Goro is sharpening a big Yanone (arrow-head) at his home in preparation to attack his father’s enemy Kudo Suketsune. After Goro has fallen asleep, his older brother Juro appears in his dream. Juro disappears after leaving a message: “I’m captured in Kudo’s house now. Come and help me.” Goro springs to his feet and goes off to save Juro, riding a horse that he has taken from a passer-by horseman.
Goro in “Yanone” wears Sujikuma as shown in the picture and is a typical Aragoto character as with the leading role of “Shibaraku”.
