  • Izaemon, a representative role of the ruined person, in “Kuruwa Bunsho”. Nakamura Tomijuro 5th as Izaemon. December, 1992 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100176000282)
It is a type of stage direction or acting of the Wagoto style for the actor to perform a person of higher rank falling into ruined circumstances. This acting was developed by being incorporated into O-ie sodo mono during the Genroku period. It is interesting to see a gap between their miserable appearance, and elegant and soft gestures naturally coming out because they are originally from a family of high status.
The actor is required to express lightness and humor. The chief examples include Fujiya Izaemon in “Kuruwa Bunsho”.
