Yago (stage family name)

【屋号】

【YAGO】

  • Yago of “Otowaya” on umbrellas in “Suibodai Godo no Nozarashi”. Onoe Kikugoro 7th as Nozarashi Gosuke. December, 1993 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100183000290)
Kabuki actors have their own Yago by families. The origin of it is not clearly known. It is assumed that they used Yago because Kabuki actors in the Edo period were not allowed to use a surname, or they had Yago because they were running a cosmetics or sweets store as a side business.
It can be said that Yago is quite familiar to the ordinary audience because it is used as a design for props and costumes, or called out as Kakegoe from the audience seats. The picture shows an example of Onoe Kikugoro family’s Yago “Otowaya” being painted on an umbrella that is a prop to be used in a Tachimawari scene.
