It refers to the types of characters, according to the social status, age, position in a story. They are roughly categorized as Tachiyaku (good man), Katakiyaku (villain man), and Onnagata (woman). In addition, there are such roles as Douke (clown) and Fukeyaku (elderly person).
Each role type has more specific classification. For example, Tachiyaku roles can be divided into the Aragoto, Wagoto, and Jitsugoto characters. Katakiyaku roles can be divided into Jitsuaku and Iroaku characters.
One role is assigned so characteristic a costume and makeup as to be visually distinguished.
