This is a theatre in Nihonbashi Hama-cho, Tokyo, which was opened in Hisamatsu-cho in 1873 under the name of Kishoza. After that, its name was changed many times as the theatre was destroyed by fire, and finally named Meijiza when it was reopened in 1893. In 1928, the theatre was opened in the current location, Nihonbashi Hama-cho. The current building was completed in 1993, and it seats 1,366 to the third floor.
Although not many Kabuki performances are given today, Ichikawa Sadanji 1st and Ichikawa Sadanji 2nd developed their careers during the Meiji and Taisho periods, making the theatre their home ground.
