Masaoka, one of the demanding Onnagata role, in “Meiboku Sendaihagi”. Nakamura Ganjiro 3rd (Sakata Tojuro 4th) as Masaoka. November, 1998 at the National Theatre.
She appears in “Meiboku Sendaihagi”, a representative O-ie sodo mono. It is a role of a foster mother who protects a young lord of the master’s house to the end at the sacrifice of her own son, and counted as one of the biggest of all Onnagata roles.
She wears a wig of “Katahazushi” typical for waiting women at a samurai residence, and a red kimono also characteristic of this role, making an impression of a strong woman filled with loyalty.
