Honcho Nijushiko
【本朝廿四孝】
【HONCHONIJUSHIKO】
It was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Takemotoza in Osaka in 1766, and revised into a Kabuki play in the same year. It is a Jidaimono play by dramatizing the battle between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, the warriors in the Sengoku period.
In Kabuki, the scenes commonly called “Jussyuko” and “Okuniwa” in which Kenshin’s daughter Yaegakihime appear, are often performed. Yaegakihime is famous as one of the representative “Akahime” roles called Sanhime, and counted as a demanding Onnagata role.
