The Heike Monogatari (tales of Heike [the Taira clan])

【平家物語】

【HEIKEMONOGATARI】

  • First part of “the Heike Monogatari”. “The Heike Monogatari” (Kakuichi-bon text) owned by Ryukoku University Library in Omiya. (021-332-12)
The tale is said to have been established in the early Kamakura period. It is a Gunkimono (war chronicle) that describes the Taira clan’s prosperity and downfall after they were defeated by the Genji. The story became widely popular among the people with the help of Biwa Hoshi who would tell stories while playing the Biwa. For this reason, many works were written for Noh, Kabuki, and Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play), in which the characters from “the Heike Monogatari” were adapted as a subject matter.
