  • Ichikawa Danjuro 12th performing Fudomyoo in “Narukami Fudo Kitayamazakura”. January, 1996 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100197000339)
One of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays.
Since Ichikawa Danjuro 1st, the Ichikawa Danjuro family has had faith in Fudomyoo (Acala) of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Chiba. It is said that Danjuro 2nd was born as a result of Danjuro 1st’s prayer reaching to this Fudomyoo.
It is said that this play was initially performed by Danjuro 2nd in 1697, and that the audience in the Edo period would throw in some money as Osaisen (an offering) towards Danjuro who was performing Fudo on stage.
The play had long been abandoned until another performance was given in “Narukami Fudo Kitayamazakura” revived by Onoe Shoroku 2nd at the National Theatre in 1967.
