Mimyo, a representative Fukeoyama, in “Omigenji Senjin Yakata”. Nakamura Matagoro 2nd as Mimyo. October, 1991 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100168000097)
It refers to the roles of elderly women. In the early stage of Kabuki, female roles older than the middle age used to be called “Kashagata”. The Fukeoyama characters appear mainly in Gidayu-Kyogen plays. The chief examples include Mimyo in “Omigenji Senjin Yakata” and Kakuju in “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”, both of which have the stubbornness and the sympathetic nature of an elderly person.
