【HIKINUKI】

Hikinuki in “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji”. Nakamura Shikan 7th as Hanako. March, 1990 at the National Theatre.
It refers to a stage direction to instantaneously change costumes on stage. Both shoulders and sleeves of a costume divided into the upper and lower parts are fastened with strong thread. By removing the thread, another costume worn under the outer clothes will be visible and the actor can quickly change his costume. The prompter who removes thread is to be assigned to the performing actor’s pupil.
The video shows Hikinuki in “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji”. In addition to this, Hikinuki can be frequently seen in the dance plays like “Sagimusume”, in which Onnagata actors take an active part. There are various techniques for the direction, one of which is “Bukkaeri”.
