It is a type of villain roles that appear in the Kabuki-Juhachiban “Shibaraku”, among other plays. The characters are called “Haradashi” as they show their red belly (hara) as in the picture. They appear as retainers of a noble villain called “Uke”.
The villain roles of lower ranked retainers like Haradashi that serve a large scale Jitsuaku character, are called Hagataki. The Jitsuaku role covers the face white to show his cold-blooded nature and his personality is rather grand, but in most cases the Hagataki character wears Akattsura makeup and his personality is simple-minded and provoking. While both types are categorized as villain roles, they form a contrast to each other.
