Ningyoburi (dancing in imitation of puppet)

【人形振り】

【NINGYOBURI】

Ningyoburi in “Shochikubai Yuki no Akebono” (“Date Musume Koi no Higanoko”). Bando Tamasaburo 5th as Oshichi. January, 1986 at the National Theatre.
It refers to a special stage direction of acting in a stiff and uncoordinated way that imitates the movement of puppets, found in the Gidayu-Kyogen plays and the dance plays. This acting is mostly employed to express the extremely nervous and excited feeling of young girl characters, which is a highlight of the Onnagata acting. One of the chief examples include Oshichi in “Shochikubai Yuki no Akebono”, as shown in the video. Also, there is an example in which it may be performed by a clownish villain role like Iwanaga Saemon in “Dannoura Kabuto Gunki”. In most cases, the pupils of the performing actor disguise themselves in Kurogo dress as a puppet operator.
