It is a long, monumental play written from 1814 to 1841 by Takizawa Bakin and considered his representative work. This is a novel about the Satomi family, a daimyo of Awa (today Chiba prefecture). The eight dog warriors, former retainers of the family, who each have a bead with the kanji letter of Jin (humanity), Gi (justice), Rei (courtesy), Chi (wisdom), Chu (loyalty), Shin (sincerity), Ko (filial piety), and Tei (obedience), seek the way to restore the master’s family.
This play is very popular and has been performed numerous times both in Kabuki and Ningyo-Joruri.
