Nakamura Tomijuro 1st (1721~1786)
He was a third son of Yoshizawa Ayame 1st who was active in the Genroku period, and a representative Onnagata actor during the An’ei and Tenmei periods (1772~1789) of the mid-Edo period. He gained popularity by playing a wide variety of roles ranging from the Jidaimono to the Sewamono plays, but particularly excelled in the Shosagoto plays. It is said that he premiered “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji”, a representative work of Onnagata dance that is often performed today, and that he performed the play more than a dozen times during his lifetime.
