Nakamura Shichisaburo 1st (1662~1708)
He was a representative actor in the Genroku period and developed his career mainly in Edo. His popularity and ability as an actor almost equaled Ichikawa Danjuro 1st. He was a good-looking actor and specialized in the Wagoto plays, as opposed to Danjuro whose specialization had been the Aragoto plays.
He played the leading role in “Keisei Asamagatake” after going to Kyoto in 1698 and its performance gained so huge a reputation as to be performed for 120 days. It is said that his acting in the Wagoto style was so splendid that Sakata Tojuro 1st was astonished by it.
