The theatre was kept since the Edo period. It is said that the origin goes back to 1624 when Nakamura (Saruwaka) Kanzaburo 1st built it and named it Saruwakaza. It was recognized as the most prestigious playhouse in Edo.
In 1842, the theatre was moved from Sakai-cho to Saruwaka-machi. After the Meiji period, it was maintained by changing its location and name. However, the theatre was destroyed in fire in 1893 and never rebuilt since.
