It was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Takemotoza Theatre in Osaka in 1732 and was turned into Kabuki in Osaka the following year.
The story is about Akushichibyoe Kagekiyo, a general of the Heike clan, and his lover Akoya, a prostitute, pursued by the Genji after the Heike family was destroyed.
In Kabuki, a scene called “Akoya Kotozeme” in which Akoya is forced by Chichibu no Shoji Shigetada on the Genji side to play the koto, Shamisen, and kokyu, as she does not tell the whereabouts of Kagekiyo. This work is renowned for this scene in which the actor really performs these instruments on stage.
