Taiko (drum)

【太鼓】

【TAIKO】

Shime-daiko performed by an actor on stage in “Mukashi Gatari Uguisu Zuka”. Ichikawa Somegoro 7th (Matsumoto Koshiro 10th) as Gennosuke and Nakamura Tozo 6th as Tamaki. October, 2007 at the National Theatre.
In Kabuki, the O-daiko (large drum) and Shime-daiko (tight drum) represent a variety of drums used in performances. The O-daiko is 80-90cm in diameter, and struck as a signal of opening and closing during the day of a performance. Also, it is used in the Geza music to produce the sound of the rain or wave.
The Shime-daiko is about 26cm in diameter, and used in the Geza music or as an accompaniment to the dance. The video shows a rare scene in which the actor on stage plays the Shime-daiko on his own.
