Senshuraku

【千秋楽(千穐楽)】

【SENSHURAKU】

It refers to the last day of a performance, and called “Raku” for short. The Kanji characters for the term are written as “千秋楽” for Sumo and other theatrical performances, but for Kabuki it can also be written as “千穐楽”. Since the theatres in the Edo period were made of wood, they were often destroyed by fire, and no performance could not be given until the building was rebuilt. Therefore, the people avoided a word “火 (fire)” included in “秋” by replacing it with “穐“.
