Kabuki repertoire can be classified roughly into two categories: Jidaimono and Sewamono.
The Sewamono dramas are based on a subject of the ongoing life of ordinary people in the Edo period. The characters are mostly townsmen at that time. Many of the dramas are based on social incidents that took place during the period. The plays dealing with human sympathy were performed many times. The people would feel closeness and sympathy with the characters, for the world of the plays was close to their real life. It can be the same feeling as watching TV dramas today.
