It was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) in 1773 in Osaka. At the end of the Edo period the play was turned into Kabuki. Today, “Gappo Anjitsu no ba” is often performed.
Tamategozen, a wife in Takayasu family, appears as the leading role. The story of the play is that she determines to devote herself into fake love to save his son-in-law Shuntokumaru from the family’s internal affairs. One highlight is a scene in which Tamategozen tells the truth while gasping for breath, after stubbed by her father Gappo who has yet to know the true cause of her behavior.
