In 1746, it was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Takemotoza Theatre in Osaka. The work was co-written by Takeda Izumo, Miyoshi Shoraku, and Namiki Senryu. Gaining a huge reputation there, it was performed as a Kabuki play in Kyoto the same year. The following year, it was performed at Nakamuraza Theatre in Edo. It is one of the masterpieces of Gidayu-Kyogen along with “Kanadehon Chushingura” and “Yoshitsune Sembonzakura”. An incident in which Sugawara Michizane was deported to Dazaifu in the Heian period was arranged with legends. Sugawara Michizane appears as a character called Kanshojo in the play.
Today, “Domyoji”, “Kurumabiki”, “Ga no Iwai”, “Terakoya” and other scenes are still performed often. “Kurumabiki no ba” represents a characteristic of Kabuki by incorporating the stage directing of the Aragoto style.
