It was premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) in Edo in 1770. This work was written by Hiraga Gennai under the name of Fukuuchi Kigai and turned into a Kabuki play in 1794.
Today, the performance is given with a focus on “Tonbei Sumika no ba” in which a girl called Ofune who plays an active role. She is one of the representative girl roles and characterized as a miserable figure saving Nitta Yoshimine who she fell in love with at the price of her own life. On the contrary, her father Tonbei appears as a greedy Katakiyaku who tries to capture Yoshimine.
