It refers to the performing arts of storytelling accompanied by the Shamisen. Prior to the Azuchi and Momoyama periods, the biwa was used for accompaniment. At the end of the 17th century, Gidayu-bushi was established and developed in association with manipulating puppets. After Tokiwazu-, Tomimoto-, and Kiyomoto-bushi were established in Edo in the mid-18th century, their songs came to be used for the Shosagoto (dance dramas) in Kabuki.
