【JOSHIKIMAKU】

  • Joshikimaku(from the second-floor seats).
The word “Joshiki” is used in Kabuki, meaning that something is always used. The Joshiki-maku is a curtain to be always used and is painted in three colors as shown in the picture. At the National Theatre, the curtain is painted in black, Moegi (dark green), and persimmon color from the left to the right.
The curtain in the past differed in the three major theatres in Edo. At Nakamuraza Theatre, it was white, yellowish brown, and black. At Ichimuraza, they used black, Moegi, and yellowish brown, the same colors as the National Theatre. At Moritaza, the order was black, yellowish brown, and Moegi. Today, Kabukiza Theatre and most theatres use the same curtain as the one at Moritaza.
The curtain opens gradually from the left to the right side of the stage.
