It refers to a role of Katakiyaku, namely a villain of the leader-level who plans a rebellion. Jitsuaku characters in O-ie sodo mono (plays on family affairs) are especially called “Kunikuzushi”. The character’s face is painted white, and he wears a wig of Ende or Oji, making his appearance look cold-blooded and imposing. The chief examples include Matsunaga Daizen in “Gion Sairei Shinkoki” and Nikki Danjo in “Meiboku Sendaihagi”, both of which are prominent characters comparable to the leading roles.
