Sammaime

【三枚目】

【SAMMAIME】

  • Sagisaka Bannai wearing Zareguma in “Michiyuki Tabiji no Hanamuko” from “Kanadehon Chushingura”. Ichikawa Unosuke 3rd (Ichkawa Sainyu 2nd). October, 1986 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100138000137)
It refers to an actor who plays comical characters.
In front of the theatre buildings in the Edo period, a wooden board was posted with the names of the actors written upon it. The actors listed on the first board were called Kakidashi (written at the top), while the comical actors were usually written on the third board (sammaime), which is why they came to be called this way.
Sammaime wears an apparently humorous costume and Kumadori makeup “Zareguma”, so that he may add an accent to a performance. In addition, there are some Sammaime characters, albeit as supporting roles, have some important featured scenes. The examples are Sagisaka Bannai in “Kanadehon Chushingura” and “Yodarekuri” role in the scene of “Terakoya” from “Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami”.
