Sakata Tojuro 1st (1647~1709)
He was a Tachiyaku actor in Kamigata region during the Genroku period and left his mark on history as an actor who established the Wagoto style. The role of Izaemon in “Yugiri Nagori no Shogatsu” that was performed by Tojuro in 1678 gained a great reputation, and consequently he continued to perform the role throughout his career. In addition, he became a prominent actor in Kamigata region by appearing as the leading roles in many works by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The Wagoto style established by Tojuro was passed down through generations of the actors in the region.
