Kotsuzumi (small hand drum)

Kotsuzumi played by an actor on stage in “Keisei Hangonko”. Kataoka Takataro as Otoku and Kataoka Ainosuke 6th as Matahei. July, 2004 at the National Theatre.
In Kabuki, it is a musical instrument used for Nagauta or Geza. It is also used for Noh. The length is about 26cm and the part that is struck is about 20 cm in diameter.
The performer holds and beats it on his right shoulder sustained with his left hand. The instrument can produce a soft sound like “Pon, pon”. The video shows a scene from “Keisei Hangonko” in which an actor strikes the Kotsuzumi on stage.
