The National Theatre was opened in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo in 1966. The exterior was built by imitating the Azekura-zukuri style of the Shosoin Tresure Repository located in Todai-ji Temple of Nara. The building houses large and small theatres. The large theatre is used mainly for Kabuki performances and seats 1,610 from the 1st to 3rd floors. The small theatre is a venue mainly for Bunraku (Ningyo-Joruri) performances and has the capacity of -590 seats.
Other than Kabuki and Bunraku, Japanese dance and traditional music, as well as folk performing arts are performed. The National Theatre has two tasks in addition to introducing performances, namely “research” and “training”. In the realm of “research”, we have collected, researched and presented the documents regarding theatrical activities since the opening. In “training”, we have successfully produced traditional art performers in Kabuki and other areas by recruiting trainees.
*National Theatre is closed for the “National Theatre Reconstruction Project - Towards a New Adventure -” from the end of October 2023.
