  • Chubei cutting the seal in “Koibikyaku Yamato Orai”. Nakamura Jakuemon 4th as Umegawa, Kataoka Takao (Kataoka Nizaemon 15th) as Chubei, and Kataoka Gato 5th as Hachiemon. April, 1983 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100121000055)
This is a Kabuki play revised from “Meido no Hikyaku” originally written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play).
There are two scenes from the play that are performed often: “Fuinkiri” in which Kameya Chubei who is involved with a prostitute Umegawa gets upset by an insult to his being poor and cuts the seal of daimyo’s official money without regard to the extreme penalty. And “Ninokuchimura” in which Chubei and Umegawa visit his real father while being pursued. Chubei is counted as a representative Wagoto role in Kamigata region. One of the highlights in “Fuinkiri” is an exchange of lines in Kamigata dialect by Chubei and Hachiemon, a Katakiyaku role.
