“Koinyobo Somewake Tazuna”. Nakamura Utaemon 6th as Shigenoi and Nakamura Koji (Nakamura Shikan 8th) as Sankichi. March, 1973 at the National Theatre. (Y_E0100056000116)
It was first premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Takemotoza Theatre in Osaka in 1751, and then revised into a Kabuki play in the same year at Nakamuraza Theatre in Edo.
Today, a scene commonly called “Shigenoi Kowakare” is performed, in which Shigenoi, a nursing mother in a daimyo family, sees a little son Sankichi again, but eventually they must be separated. The role of Shigenoi is considered demanding among the Onnagata characters called “Katahazushi”. The second half of the play in which she leaves Sankichi against her will is one of the highlights along with the acting of Sankichi by a juvenile.
