Keshogoe

【化粧声】

【KESHOGOE】

Keshogoe in “Shibaraku”. Ichikawa Danjuro 12th as Kamakura Gongoro. November, 1995 at Kabukiza Theatre.
It refers to a loud voice calling out “Dekkee” after repeating “Arya, Korya, Arya, Korya”. The actors of a daimyo and his subordinates lining up on stage call out for the leading character who is acting in the Aragoto style. While he is making motions, they repeat “Arya, Korya, Arya, Korya” several times. After that, they call out “Dekkee” at the moment when the leading role assumes a Mie pose along with noisily beaten Tsuke (clappers struck on a board).
The leading character of the Aragoto style is required of forcefulness as well as a large-scale presence. Keshogoe is the word of praise for the actor’s great presence and acting on stage.
The video shows a scene from a Kabuki-Juhachiban play “Shibaraku” in which the Keshogoe is called out.
