The story starring Yugiri, a Keisei (prostitute) in Osaka, and Fujiya Izaemon formed a genre called “Keisei-gai Kyogen (about buying the service of prostitutes)”, and has been dramatized in many ways for performance since Sakata Tojuro 1st. “Kuruwa Bunsho” is a representative play of “Yugiri Kyogen” that is still performed today, and commonly called “Yoshidaya”.
The leading character Izaemon is a young master of a merchant house who was disinherited by his parents. The typical acting of the Wagoto style can be seen in Izaemon’s acting in the scenes in which he appears on the Hanamichi dressed in Kamiko to visit his lover Yugiri who is a prostitute at Yoshidaya, and in which he becomes jealous when Yugiri looks after other guests.
