Kurumabin

【車鬢】

【KURUMABIN】

  • Kagekiyo painted by Toyokuni.
It is a name for a wig. This is a unique hairstyle in Kabuki: the long hair in the anterior sides of both ears are tied up into several bundles and solidified with hair oil so that they are swelled out on both sides of the face. It is used for the leading roles of the Aragoto plays and classified as “five Kurumabin” or “seven Kurumabin” according to the number of the bundles. The Nishikie painting shows the “five Kurumabin” in “Kagekiyo”, which is also used for Kamakura Gongoro in “Shibaraku”.
