This is a unique makeup for Kabuki mainly used for the characters in Jidaimono dramas. It is said that the makeup was originally drawn to express the blood vessels and the muscle of the face in an exaggerated manner. The colors used for Kumadori are determined by roles.
-“Red”: used for the roles with courage, justice and strength, all of which are the basic characteristics of the Aragoto style.
-“Indigo”: used for the large-scale Katakiyaku roles.
-“Brown”: used for the creepy unhuman roles like demons or ghosts.
Kumadori is expressed as “taking” it rather than “drawing” it in Japanese. In addition, the line is blurred with the finger to finish off.
