Kumagai Naozane (Year of birth unknown~1208)
He was a general of the Genji clan who fought in a battle between the Genji and the Heike. He entered the priesthood and became a disciple of Honen in 1192. That he defeated Taira no Atsumori in the battle of Ichinotani is described in “Heike Monogatari”, which made his name known among the people at that time. His success was dramatized in a play “Ichinotani Futaba Gunki”, which is considered a chief example of Jitsugoto requiring an actor to act as Kumagai Naozane in an introspective manner.
Kumagai in the scene “Kumagai Jinya no ba” appears dressed in Kamishimo as shown in the picture. There was no Kamishimo during that period, but it is used in Kabuki as a costume to represent the samurai regardless of the age in which the story is told.
