A scene of Kudoki to the Shamisen performance by Takemoto in “Meiboku Sendaihagi”. Nakamura Ganjiro 3rd (Sakata Tojuro 4th)as Masaoka. November, 1998 at the National Theatre.
In Kabuki, a scene of Gidayu-Kyogen in which a woman passionately appeals her own feelings is normally called “Kudoki”. For most Gidayu-Kyogen plays, the leading roles are performed by Tachiyaku actors. However, in “Kudoki”, Onnagata becomes the central actor and performs a stylistic movement close to the Japanese dance accompanied by the Shamisen or narrating of Takemoto to show off her emotion. The video is a scene of “Kudoki” performed by “Masaoka” in “Meiboku Sendaihagic. Masaoka appeals her sentiment for her son who died protecting a young lord.
There is also a part called “Kudoki” for Onnagata dances, which is usually choreographed in such a way as to express a woman’s graceful heart.
