Originally, it refers to the author of Kabuki plays. In the early stage of Kabuki, a short, single-act play “Hanare Kyogen” was performed, and the actor was also the author. After that, “Tsuzuki Kyogen”, a long story performed in multiple acts, was established. During the Genroku period, while Ichikawa Danjuro 1st (under the name of Mimasuya Hyogo) and other actors wrote their own plays, professional Kyogen-Sakusha started to appear, apart from author-actors. This is because professional writers were sought after as the story became more and more complex. Chikamatsu Monzaemon has left his mark on history as a leading Kyogen-Sakusha.
The Kyogen-Sakusha today are mainly responsible for managing the progress of the stage by striking the wooden clappers to inform the time at which a performance begins.
