A scene of “Kudoki”, one of the highlights in “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji”. Nakamura Shikan 7th as Hanako. March, 1990 at the National Theatre.
This is an Onnagata dance that became very popular after being premiered by Nakamura Tomijuro 1st at Nakamuraza Theatre in 1753. Prior to this, there had already been a play on the setting adopted from a Noh work “Dojoji”: “a woman visits Dojoji and performs before priests, and seizes the chance to jump into the temple bell”. After all, “Kyoganoko Musume Dojoji” became the definitive version of the subject and is still considered a representative repertoire for Onnagata dance. The play presents various elements of Onnagata dance consisted of many highlights, including “Michiyuki”, a dance on the Hanamichi accompanied by Takemoto, “Ranbyoshi”, a Noh-like dance wearing an Eboshi hat, and “Kudoki” in which the actor passionately expresses a young girl’s feeling of love.
