One of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays.
Kan’u (Guan Yu) is one of the representative characters in a Chinese classic “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and is illustrated as a person renowned for his extraordinary valor. In the Edo period, the epic was very popular among the common people.
It is said that since 1737, Ichikawa Danjuro 2nd performed Kan’u several times in the Aragoto style but its content is not known in details. The play was abandoned during the Edo period, but was revived several times since the Meiji period. Recently, Onoe Shoroku 2nd revived it at the National Theatre in 1985.
