This is the main character of “Meido no Hikyaku”, a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (in Kabuki, a revised version “Koibikyaku Yamoto Orai” is performed). He is a son-in-law of Hikyaku Donya (a courier merchant) called Kameya. Chubei can be considered one of the representative characters of the Wagoto in Kamigata region; particularly his acting in “Fuinkiri” in which he delivers his lines with a few ad-libs.
