This is the main character of “Shinju Ten no Amijima”, a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. In Kabuki, a revised version of this play is often performed. Jihei is counted as one of the representative characters of the Wagoto in Kamigata region. He becomes emotionally involved with a prostitute named Koharu while he has a wife and children, and ends up in a collective suicide with her.
