It is a Jidaimono drama first premiered as a Ningyo-Joruri (puppet play) at Hizenza Theatre in Edo in 1781, and then revised into a Kabuki play. The story is about the Summer Siege of Osaka in which Tokugawa Ieyasu destroyed the house of Toyotomi.
 Tokihime is renowned as one of the demanding “Akahime (red princess)” roles which are called “Sanhime (three princesses). It is demanding because the role requires of an actor to imitate a young princess who is caught in a dilemma of her father and fianc? fighting each other being divided into friend and foe, and finally determines to avenge the father.
