Kamakura Gongoro

【鎌倉権五郎】

【KAMAKURAGONGORO】

  • Kamakura Gongoro. Painted by Kochoro Kunisada.
This is the main character of “Shibaraku”, one of the Kabuki-Juhachiban plays. As a hero of justice, he appears from the Hanamichi, saying “shibaraku, shibaraku (for a moment)” to save the people who are about to be cut with the sward by the villain. Being a typical Aragoto character, his costume, wig, and props are all exaggerated to express his strength and forcefulness. He wears Sujiguma makeup on his face and a wig of five Kurumabin, as well as a formal samurai attire called Daimon made bigger than worn in the real world. The sword in the play is about three meters long and made bigger than its practical size.
