Izumo no Okuni performed it in Kyoto in 1603 as a record shows. It is said that she performed the moment of Chaya-Asobi (the pursuit of pleasure at a teahouse) in the appearance of a young man called Kabukimono who was walking on the street in a showy attire and with a big sword.
The dance of Okuni, which adopted the fashion at that time such as the pursuit of pleasure at a teahouse and the attire of Kabukimono, became popular among the common people. Therefore, it is said that a lot of female performers started to dance in men’s attire by imitating the way Okuni performed.
